PRESS RELEASE FROM THE NORWEGIAN SKI FEDERATION TODAY:
Therese Johaug has tested positive for drug clostebol after using the cream Trofodermin on a sun burns lip. Sunburn she suffered during altitude training with cross-country team in Italy in late August.
In Livigno took national team doctor Fredrik S. Bendiksen two creams for wound care at an Italian chemist. One of the two creams was central Trofodermin. This cream gave Bendiksen to Johaug, on the evening of September 4, 2016. She checked with the doctor, who assured her that the cream was allowed to use, and did not contain any substances included on the Prohibited List. The doctor thought that the cream didn’t contains clostebol, which stands on WADA’s ban list. The cream was used as directed by your doctor between 4th and 15th September 2016.
- I am devastated and distraught over having arrived in this very difficult and for me unreal situation. I find this unfair and totally undeserved, although of course I am aware of my responsibilities as a performer has for medicine I use, says Therese Johaug.
- I have and take responsibility for ensuring that Therese has ingested the illegal drug clostebol via cream Trofodermin, said national team doctor Fredrik S. Bendiksen, who is deeply unhappy about the situation he has put Therese in. – Therese is an amazing upright person and performer that is carefully and precisely in all that she does. The most important thing for me now is to do everything I can to make sure she does not get punished because she used a cream which I assured her was legal to use, says Bendiksen.
Friday, 16 September this year it was taken a urine sample (out-of-competition) by Therese Johaug. She gave when she had used the cream Trofodermin. In urine sample substance clostebol found that are on WADA list of prohibited substances. Tuesday, 4 October 2016, she was informed by Antidoping Norway if found in the urine sample.
What is important for us now is to safeguard Therese and Fredrik in the best possible way and have full disclosure of what has happened, says leader of the cross-country committee Thorbjorn Skogstad. – This is a serious situation for Therese Johaug, Fredrik Bendiksen and Norwegian cross country skiing. Cross Country Committee has convened the national leadership to meet to consider any immediate measures. This specific case, we can not comment further until it has finished processing of Anti-Doping Norway said Skogstad.
This is a terribly sad day. Now we are most concerned with Therese and Frederik’s welfare, said ships resident Erik Røste. We stand together in this difficult situation. Skistyret is concerned that Norwegian cross country again have ended up in such a demanding situation and are concerned that cross-country committee takes action to prevent this from happening again, says ships resident Erik Røste.
